Suck It Up Buttercup

Now that the New Year is underway, you may be updating your database. And if you’re like me, you beat yourself up when you see a client’s name you haven’t stayed in contact with. Yes, it happens to the best of us! It’s a horrible feeling because you know better, but at this point, it can be easier to bury your head in the sand than to acknowledge you’ve blown them off.

In these moments, I have four words for you…. “SUCK IT UP BUTTERCUP.” Yes, it’s awkward to reach out to someone out of the blue, but it’s worse to lose them as a client forever.

Here are five easy ways you can get back into their good graces.

#1: Pick Up The Phone

Go old school! Pick up the phone and give them a call. Just let your client know you’re thinking about them. And hear this loud and clear…DO NOT TALK BUSINESS. I repeat, DO NOT TALK BUSINESS. If you do this, they’ll see right through you. Ask about their family, work, and children. And most of all, LISTEN. Say goodbye and only talk business if they bring it up.

#2: Send A Birthday Or Housiversary Card

Birthdays and housiversaries are the perfect opportunities to connect. Everyone loves to be celebrated on their birthday so instead of the typical Facebook post this year, send a handwritten note. Or, send a housiversary card in honor of the day they became a homeowner. They’ll feel special knowing you remembered them.

#3: Invite Them To An Event

If you haven’t connected personally with your sphere in a while, consider hosting an event. Invite a group of clients to a game, concert, or theater production, or host a happy hour. Whether they can attend or not, they’ll be grateful for the gesture.

#4: Send A Home Valuation

Everyone wants to know what their home is worth in today’s market. So sending a home valuation with a personal note is sure to be appreciated. This is a great way to break the ice and open the door to communication.

#5: Connect On Social Media

Follow your clients on social media. Start commenting on their posts regularly and post meaningful comments. Write a full sentence, not just a couple of words. By doing this, your message will feel more sincere.
